School of Hope in Lamarre, Haiti, began in 2016 with a class of 31 kindergarten and pre-kindergarten students. We were very excited about this new endeavor in our son’s home village! Here’s the story…
After purchasing land in the central mountains of Haiti, the first school/church building was constructed. After shipping the materials for a large metal building to the town of Lamarre, Chuck enlisted a team of local friends from the Boothbay area to travel with him and assemble it. Since its inception with approximately 30 students, the school has over 500 children enrolled {year 2024), as we continue to add a grade each year. Five major building projects to increase classroom space and expand the church capacity have been completed. The large majority of children walk to school {some for 1-2 hours each way}, while a few are brought by “tap tap” motorbikes. The regular day school is the heart of Hope Haitian Ministries. Students are provided with a noon meal each day and a solid curriculum with trained instructors. For most families, the school represents the only opportunity for an education, and our kitchen staff works diligently to offer a nutritious daily meal. In recent years we have developed a modest library and a computer lab with donated laptops from the U.S. God willing, a pre-k to grade 12 education will be meeting the needs of these many young people for years to come. Many students now are sponsored through the Compassion International Sponsorship program, which provides schooling, medical care, and food.
